This is Converse and Lay Zhang’s first collaboration together, inspired by the authentic dance experiences during Lay’s early career. The small pocket on the side of the shoe is a nod to his practice of tying sandbags to his feet, and the glow-in-the-dark sole symbolizes his perseverance in practicing alone in a dark dance studio. Using the high-cut edition of the perennially popular Chuck 70, Zhang specs all-white canvas uppers. Being the premium Chuck Taylor, expect a heavier and more durable gauge of fabric. Accenting the tongue is an intricate blue pattern, referencing the blue-glazed lotus artwork that historically adorns Chinese pottery. These lotuses repeat on the heel and ankle stripes, and also decorate the silk-like bandana that’s tied around the right shoe’s ankle. According to Zhang, this signifies a union between cultural motifs.
The joining of Eastern artistry and Western showmanship continues on the iced-out midsole, revealing more of the pottery pattern underfoot. Furthermore, the clear soles reveal a glow-in-the-dark effect that activates in the dark. Other details that are initially hidden include Zhang’s logo printed on the bandana, and matching lace dubraes. Other complementary finishes include white and blue ankle patches, plus blue insole prints.
